Abstract

Hypermarket is a self service concept community shopping center, offers a complete consumer needs, which begin in late 1990’s. during this period, the allocation of hypermarket are still centered in the urban area and creating many problems such as traffic congestion and environment impact etc. the evaluation of its allocation is not done properly whether it capable to be closes the existing hypermarket which attracts consumer or a direct impact to the local retailers. The planners explain the usage of Goal Achievement Matrix and Planning Balance Sheet method is not capable to support in evaluating the suitability location of alternative site. In Kuala Lumpur there are a few ninth stores hypermarket such as Giant, Carrefour, Tesco and makro. The distributions are linear which is along the main road especially highways. These study is to determine the suitability of the new hypermarket location trough overlay analysis based on criteria of site selection fit which is location of hypermarket based on distance from main roads, distance with existing hypermarket, distance with nearby neighbourhoods area, area that within the population catchments and direction of development in the growth area. The selection is based on the capability geographic information and the availability of relevant data. The potential sites were evaluated by the traditional model namely gravity Model that based on the modification of Newton’s Gravity Law to Reilly Retail Gravitational Law. A few of gravity parameter were used which adapted such as distance from every hypermarket to neighbourhood centre, the floor space of each hypermarket, consumer retail expenditure according to dwelling zone and the total sales of each hypermarkets. Based on the research findings six potential sites are potential to be developed and evaluate through the gravity model analysis. The site which had the highest of total sales was chosen to become the new hypermarket in Kuala Lumpur. With the help of GIS technologies, the strength of attraction is able to be predicted and the pattern of gravity surface can be displayed. This result also found out the potential site is situated in sub-urban centre area and close to highway access. It is proven that the placement of commercial centre consider the behavior of consumer in shopping and close to residential area. Hopefully with the result this research it can be the starting point for conventional model applications to shift into geospatial information form to ensure high and standard quality of the development planned for the inhabitants.
