Abstract

The incidence of natural disasters is considered as notable calamities of life affecting people in various aspects; while the effort on reestablishing life is an inseparable essence of human nature. Regarding the key role of home place in the existence of man and in recovery process as well, the available opportunity of local participation in new housing must be applied wisely to overcome faced challenges following disasters. This paper aims to study the efforts of 2003 Bam earthquake's survivors through coping with home loss challenge within participatory housing reconstruction program. And regarding the key role of sense of place theme within recovery process following the disaster, it would present the analysis of households' attitude toward their new houses. Thus, it would consider the characteristics of lost settings while searching for the impressive factors on households' perception of new built houses. Due to the fieldwork survey a group of 186 households are selected within a probability method of sampling as our respondents for both quantitative and qualitative parts of the field study. Whilst the qualitative part would be addressed in this paper, the other section is based on almost similar approach. Accordingly, the random selection of residents was organized within three defined zones of the city in which different degrees in building damages had occurred. And data collection arrangement was done through a face-to-face communication approach with target group of self built house owners. Supporting the reviewed literature on the housing reconstruction strategies, coping with loss process, local traditional styles, and the sense of home place, our findings indicates the households tend to arrange their new settings based on their perception of attachment to home place besides the experience of loss during the quake. Also the findings confirm owners' participation in housing reconstruction process within setting arrangement has a significant positive impact on their attitude toward new built homes.
