Abstract

It has been more than ninety years since the first town planner was appointed in Malaysia and more than forty years since the first planning school was established. Over the years the field of urban and regional planning as well as the training of its professionals has evolved with ever-changing challenges and situations. This paper looks back at the history of planning education in Malaysia with a focus on the evolution of urban and regional planning education at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). It covers the department’s effort to demarcate the boundaries of planning education in the face of the expanding frontiers of urban planning theory and practice.
