Abstract

The development of construction industry in our country has been boosted with the launching of the Ninth Malaysia Plan (RMK-9), from the year 2006-2010. Even though there is new technique being introduced in order to increase the productivity of the construction industry but there are still lots of problems occur in this industry especially in the matter of material needed for the construction projects. The question is whether or not the construction materials are enough to sustain the execution of Housing Development Programmed under RMK-9? Therefore, this research is conducted in order to investigate the quantity of construction materials needed during RMK-9. In this research, estimation of the quantity of construction materials will be focused in cement, sand, steel, brick and aggregate only. The category of housing development covered by the research are the low cost residential housing, medium cost residential housing and high cost residential housing. The methodology been undertaken in order to achieve the objectives of this research is a combination of documentation analysis and interviews with the contractors. The findings of this research indicate the total estimated amount of construction materials needed during the RMK-9. This research shows that the cement in need is approximately 19.5 million m3, brick in need is approximately 10.3 billion units and steel in need is approximately 1.2 million tones. There are some recommendations given in order to overcome the problems in the constructions material management.
