Abstract

Urban Sprawl has been enjoyed the spotlight as a topic of academic and applied world inquiry in urban and regional planning for about three decades. This urban phenomenon will happen according to the rapid urbanization process. Undoubtedly the time and place together with the spatial conditions have different effects on such a complex phenomenon. Iskandar Malaysia Region for example based on intensifying the economic activities in south Malaysia region can impose the rapid urbanization and consequently various urban issues like congestion, urban sprawl, degradation and so forth. Obviously, the complex nature of urban sprawl needs a sophisticated methodology in order to take into consideration the various drivers and factors that can affect endogenously and exogenously. This article intends to identify the most important criteria for urban sprawl using Analytic Network Process (ANP) based on expert opinion and integrating with GIS database, analysis and visualization capabilities in order to find the optimal pattern for future decision making and effective urban and regional planning strategies.
