Malaysian life has always been focused on water. The rivers, oceans and abundant rainfall which bless this land have traditionally provided food and transport for the inhabitants. Settlements pattern have thus tended to develop along the huge rivers that flow through this verdant peninsular. Not surprisingly, tourism in Malaysia today is also following a similar course. In Kampung Kuantan upstream from Kuala Selangor and a 15 minute drive from town, the river provides a special bonus: fireflies. At night, especially after rain and when it is moonless, the fireflies gather by the thousands in the mangroves by the riverside. Villagers ferry visitors to view this magical performance in sampans, rowed in the black stillness of the night. The sight has been compared to Christmas trees but the glowing light provided by several hundred thousand tiny blinking fireflies is far more subtle and spectacular. Developing Kampung Kuantan as an ecovillage that based on three main principle, community, ecology and spirituality will surely enhance the function of the village as a sustainable tourism spot. A development as a whole by using the natural resources of the village will contribute in achieving the needs and demands of local and foreigner tourists.
